Previous CollisionCare App Tips discussed what you can see and manage to avoid the situation. This tip discusses what you can’t see or fully evaluate as a threat to your safety. In winter driving conditions a dangerous situation exists and most drivers cannot understand it’s danger. As an example, we are discussing a 4 lane boulevard after a recent snow storm. The first step in snow removal is to plow the fallen snow to the side of the road. When snow is piled on the side of the street, depending on the amount of fallen snow, the piles of snow can take about 3 to 5 feet of horizontal space in that inside lane. Whether or not that lane is used for parking spaces or for additional traffic capacity, it is critical that drivers using the “clear of snow ” lane know that the inside lane is 30% smaller than before. Which means that traffic or parked cars are up to 5 feet closer to you than when that inside lane is completely clear. This means you need to expect parked car doors’ suddenly opening into your lane and know that traffic in that lane is much closer to you than usual. If you need to avoid cars in that “snow pile” lane, anticipate an avoidance move that will compensate for that vehicle being 5 feet closer to you than expected. In summary that snow piled in the inside lane is not seen by you but one must understand the threat the unseen snow pile brings to your driving safety.
